- Concepts & definitions: dhwani, naad (Anahat & Ahat), 12 swaras, arohan, avrohan
- Introduction & elaboration of few basic ragas: Yaman, Bilawal, Bhairav, Kafi
Second term
- Complex combinations of swaras
- Ability to sing in the three octaves (saptak)
- Ability to sing in the 1st & 2nd laya, within different taals
- Subtle knowledge of the 12 swaras & gaayaki (imitation of the vocal style)
- Introducing different taan and ornamentation
- How to use the tanpura
- Rag Bageshri, Rag Asawari, Rag Vrindavani Sarang

Third term
- Including complex sargam, shruti alankar (within the rhythm patterns) in the regular practice
- Different styles of Indian classical music (bhajan, khayal, thumri)
- Basic introduction to Dhrupad music
- Development of bandish (composition)
- Rag Malkauns, Rag Durga, Rag Desh, Rag Ahir Bhairav
- Importance of tanpura in the Indian classical music
